Research: fruit may hold key to fighting off range of illnesses, say experts

The family fruit bowl could be one of the best ways to ward off heart disease, high cholesterol and a range of cancers, several studies have revealed.

Researchers told a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago that antioxidant-rich fruits such as blueberries, grapes and black raspberries could reduce the risk of developing some cancers, while a study reported in a science journal found that oranges and grapefruit could lower bad cholesterol.

Scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey and the US Department of Agriculture said that blueberries contained the potent antioxidant pterostilbene, which seemed to help prevent colon cancer.

Ohio State University researchers said their animal studies pointed to the cancer-fighting qualities of black raspberries, potentially reducing the risk of the cancer of the oesophagus by 60% and colon cancer by up to 80%.

Another study by the University of Alabama, also presented at the the meeting, found that grape seed compounds containing the antioxidant proanthocyanidin showed promise as a way to prevent skin cancer caused by ultraviolet light exposure by boosting the immune system.

According to The Cancer Council WA, the best advice to reduce the risk of developing the disease is to eat a low-fat diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, be physically active and aim to be in the healthy weight range.
